An upgrade item is a unique item that will make certain Pokemon change. The upgrade can be obtained by spinning a PokeStop's photo disc and is sometimes offered as a reward during Pokemon GO events.

Upgrade components

Injecting an upgrade component can destroy the previous upgrade. Exceptions are glyphs (which can only be inserted into gathering tools) and Enchantments, which can be removed and reinserted freely.
Insignias, enchantments, and prefix/suffix upgrades will appear in the hover display of the item, while they will be added to the equipment's name (e.g. a Radiant Insignia will change the name to Radiant Tyrian Armor). The tooltip of an item will display the number of upgrade components that have been added to it.
Glyphs
Glyphs are special characters that can be added into an OpenType font to add decorative or functional elements, such as ligatures, fractions, ornaments, swashes, registered trademark symbols and ellipses. The Glyphs panel allows you to look up and insert these unique characters as well as regular glyphs like em dashes and en dashes registered trademark symbols and glyphs that do not appear in other fonts (such as dingbats).
Each Glyph provides a character with a boost in their primary stats. It also has up to four secondary stats that affect the glyph's radius on your Paragon Board. Secondary Stats are a percentage boost that is multiplied by additional bonuses, excluding Speed Glyphs that directly increase the hero’s speed.
The Glyphs in your inventory can be activated by selecting them and then clicking the "enchant" button. This will bring up a window that displays the Glyphs available to you. Be aware that only the correct type of Glyph can be applied to the selected item, as each weapon, piece of jewelry or armor piece may have distinct sets of Glyphs.
Glyphs can be improved by completing Nightmare Dungeons or completing Tree of Whisper quests. The more difficult the dungeon is, the greater Glyph experience you'll gain. Once a Glyph has reached the level 15 it can be upgraded using the Glyph Upgrade Altar. Upgrades to a Glyph increases its radius on the Paragon Board by one node every 15 levels.
Once a Glyph has been leveled up to the desired level, you can activate it by selecting it, then clicking the "enchant" button. The resulting glyph will provide its stated benefit and also boost the other nodes within its radius on the Paragon Board. Glyphs should go in areas that will benefit your building the most. This is why you should consider Magic Glyphs as soon as possible. Some glyphs, however, might offer dual benefits in the event that certain conditions are met and therefore are worth checking out for.
Click the cycle widget to alter the view of the Glyphs Panel. Each of these views displays the Glyphs using a different font. You can narrow the selection of glyphs further by choosing an option below "Entire Font": for example, punctuation only shows punctuation glyphs, while Math Symbols narrows the choice to mathematical symbols.
Rerolling
